Prince of Wales Lodge Donation to Prince Phillip Hospital

The brethren of the Prince of Wales were delighted to present a cheque of £600 to Prince Philip Hospital for the Garden Appeal on Mynydd Mawr Ward.

Mynydd Mawr ward is a 15-bed elderly care rehabilitation unit located next door to Bryngolau ward, an adult mental health unit. The wards both have access to an enclosed outdoor space, which at the moment is not in use and is not suitable for patients. The access to the current gardens is insufficient to allow them to get more than a few patients out at any one time and the surfaces and tarmac are uneven. There is no adequate seating. The current space isn't landscaped or tailored to meet the needs of the patients.

Senior Charge Nurse Gareth Phillips told us that the new therapeutic gardens would make a vast difference to the patients and their recovery. He added that the patients that came to that ward had been in hospital for a great length of time, sometimes months and they can become deconditioned both physically and mentally. They can sometimes be disengaged not knowing care or therapy outside four walls, so it is important to get patients, especially those with dementia and cognitive impairment , outside in the fresh air.
