On Friday 13th March at Llanelli Masonic Hall, the Provincial Grand Master (PGM), James Ross signed the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC) alongside the Government Defence representative Air Officer Wales, Air Commodore Rob Woods OBE.
The Masonic Hall was filled with Brethren from around the Province who were joined by a number of Guests including the High Sheriff of Dyfed, County Armed Forces (AF) Champions, the Dyfed Mental Health Veteran’s Champion and representatives from the Royal British Legion, SSAFA and the locally based Veteran’s and Community (VC) Gallery.
Prior to the signing, WBro Carl Rich (Squadron Leader Rtd), the Provincial AF Coordinator, explained to those present the background that led to the signing of the AFC that was established by the Government to prevent those who have served their Country from being disadvantaged as a result of their Service. Carl outlined the work that had been undertaken since the Grand Master, HRH Duke of Kent signed the AFC on behalf of UGLE in October 2021 and the resultant establishment of a UGLE National AF Strategy and more recently a Provincial one.
After the formal signing was completed, Air Commodore Woods spoke of his pleasure in seeing the Freemasons of West Wales embrace the Covenant’s intent and he recalled his memories of undertaking his basic Officer training alongside WBro Carl Rich. The PGM then addressed those present by confirming the UGLE aim to recognise and connect better with our active and retired Military brethren, and to support local AF related organisations, charities and Cadet Forces. He explained that Carl had selected a small Team and had already begun to identify Provincial Servicemen and Veterans. The AF Working Group had begun to list and engage with relevant charities, whilst it was also planned to arrange AF related visits/events. Moreover, it was hoped that individual Lodges would develop relationships with local AF organisations resulting in an increase in Brethren volunteering to assist local military related organisations and inspiring Lodges to focus some of their charitable support toward such organisations.
James Ross concluded the ceremony by presenting Mr Barry John MBE, Founder of the VC Gallery based in Pembroke and Haverfordwest, with a cheque for £45,000 to enable the Veterans’ organisation to continue its excellent work. After numerous photographs including all of those present, the Guests dispersed and the Brethren went on to attend the Kensington Lodge of Installed Masters where the PGM was installed in the Chair.
