Tenby Lodge and Chapter Support Local Good Causes

The members of Dinbych Chapter were pleased to nominate Prostate Cymru to receive a £600 award that had been made available by the West Wales Grand Charity to all thirteen Chapters within the Province.

Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer among men in Wales and the rest of the U.K, with around 50,000 new cases being diagnosed every year. Early detection and treatment of the disease is vital, and it is therefore very important for men, particularly those over 50 years old, to have their prostate checked regularly, either by physical examination or initially by having a simple PSA blood test.

Prostate Cymru is active in providing these blood tests and in contributing to the purchase of materials to aid the treatment of the disease. They have recently undertaken a programme of PSA blood testing at various locations throughout Wales.

E.Comp.Clive Webb, the current First Principal of Dinbych Chapter thankfully overcame the disease some years ago and since then he and his wife Ruth have been active volunteers for Prostate Cymru, assisting at testing centres, giving talks, and raising funds.

Chapter D.C. E.Comp. Steve Thurgood said “The majority of Freemasons are over 50 years old so awareness of the disease and the need for PSA testing is prominent in our thoughts, and is why we were delighted to make a contribution to Prostate Cymru following their extensive testing programme.”

Also, when W.Bro. Tony Upham was installed as Master of Tenby Lodge he nominated the Pembrokeshire branch of the National Autistic Society (N.A.S.) to receive the proceeds of the Installation raffle. This raised the bumper sum of £430, and it was quickly agreed to round this up to £500.

The Pembrokeshire branch of the N.A.S. has existed for 14 years. There are seven hundred members in their parent group, and around 1500 subscribe to their Facebook information group. The branch committee members organise events and outings throughout the year such as an annual tenpin bowling event, swimming parties and festive season events such as Meet Santa and a parent/carer Christmas meal.

Branch Treasurer Gill Totten commented “In August we have a trip planned for around one hundred people to Clerkenhill Adventure Farm, including family groups, and a Trainmaster model railway event. The cost of organising these events is considerable, so we are very grateful to Tenby Lodge for their donation.”
