Ion Murphy - 40 Years in the Royal Arch

As part of the Unity Chapter 50th Anniversary Celebration, The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, E Comp James Ross made two Long Service presentations, the second being to E Comp Ion Murphy.

Most Excellent, Your Excellencies, Companions,

E Comp Ion Lloyd Murphy, you were Initiated into Unity Lodge no 6709 on 4th January 1977.

You served the Lodge as Worshipful Master in 1986 and you have served the lodge as Director of Ceremonies and Chaplain. You were the lodge Charity Steward from 1998 until 2006 and you went through the Wardens Chairs for a second time in 2004 and 2005.

You have also been a loyal and faithful servant to Kensington Lodge of Installed Masters which you joined in 1987. You served that lodge as Worshipful Master in 2018. You have also held the offices of Almoner, Charity Steward, and Senior Warden. You finished your year as Immediate Past Master of Kensington Lodge at the very last Installation meeting before freemasonry was suspended for the pandemic.

In the Province of West Wales, you were first appointed to Provincial Rank in 1993. In 2003 you were promoted to the rank of Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden. You are best known for serving the province as Provincial Grand Charity Steward from 2008 until 2016. You were instrumental in delivering nearly £1.1 million at the completion of our 2015 Festival in favour of The Grand Charity.

In the United Grand Lodge of England, you were appointed to the rank of Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies in 2010 and promoted to the rank of Past Junior Grand Deacon in 2017.

In The Royal Arch, you were exalted into Unity Chapter no 6709 on 13th April 1982. You served the Chapter as Most Excellent Zerubbabel in 1994. You have held office continuously in the Chapter since 1986 including being Scribe Ezra from 1997 until 2014 and Assistant Scribe Ezra from 2014 until 2020.

In the Royal Arch Province, you were first appointed to Provincial Rank in 1997. You were promoted to Past Provincial Scribe Nehemiah in 2004. You served the province as Provincial Grand Charity Steward from 2008 until 2016. You served as my very first, Third Provincial Grand Principal in 2019.

E Comp Ion, you were educated at Gwendraeth Grammar School and Trinity College Carmarthen. You subsequently qualified as a teacher at the University of Wales School of Education becoming a Technology Teacher. Other responsibilities included being Head of Careers and Senior Head of Year.

You are married to Marva and have a son called Dylan and a daughter called Nia, who are both successful medical professionals. They have provided you with 5 grandchildren.

Despite having a busy family, professional and masonic career, or perhaps because of them, you have also found time to play golf. You are a past Captain of Ashburnham Golf Club, and you also list DIY and woodwork as hobbies.

E Comp Ion, you have been one of the big beasts of West Wales Freemasonry since before I was Initiated. You have worked tirelessly for your lodge, your chapter and for the province for many years. I am delighted to be the one making the presentation this evening. 40 years as a loyal member of the Royal Arch is a milestone which few ever reach. I congratulate you for your loyalty and dedication and I wish you good health to enjoy many more happy years in Royal Arch Masonry
