It is a great pleasure to be here with you this evening to present W Bro Glan Phillips with a certificate and badge to recognise 50 years faithful service to freemasonry.

W Bro Glan, you very kindly provided a few notes for me to use this evening. Your notes included the dates of your Initiation and Raising. The interesting thing for me as a former Provincial Secretary is that your dates are different to those on the Grand Lodge database. The very good news is that even according to the Grand Lodge database you have served a continuous period of 50 years, so I am still going to give you your certificate and badge. I have used the dates from Grand Lodge because they’re not often wrong and perhaps it might take you back 50 years and jog your memory.

W Bro Glan, according to Grand Lodge, you were Initiated on Saturday 10th June 1972 at an emergency meeting of Hen Bont Lodge no 4691 which meets in Pontypridd in the Province of South Wales. I imagine they had an additional meeting to save you having to wait until September to join the lodge as it only meets from March to May and September to December.

You were Passed on Monday 11th September 1972 and Raised on Monday 13th November 1972.

Although you remained a member of Hen Bont Lodge, your training as an Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon and studying for the examination to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons prevented you from taking an active part in the Lodge.

In 1984 you moved to Haverfordwest to take up a role as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at Withybush Hospital.

You joined Cambrian Lodge in 1991 and served the lodge as Worshipful Master in 1997. Shortly after finishing your term of office as Worshipful Master, you replaced Charles Mock as Lodge Organist. You were learning the keyboard at the time, but with the help of Charles Mock and the brethren of the lodge you served as organist for several years.

In the Craft Province you were appointed to the rank of Past Provincial Senior Grand Deacon in 2004.

In the Holy Royal Arch, you were Exalted into Hwlffordd Chapter on 1st February 1993. You went on to serve the Chapter as MEZ in 2002. As in the Craft, for many years you served the Chapter as Organist.

In the Royal Arch Province, you were appointed to the rank of Past Provincial Assistant Grand Sojourner in 2004. You were promoted to the rank of Past Provincial Grand Sword Bearer in 2013 and further promoted to the rank of Past Provincial Grand Scribe Nehemiah in 2020.

W Bro Glan the eagle eared amongst us might have noticed that you moved to Haverfordwest in 1984 but didn’t join Cambrian Lodge until December 1991 nearly 8 years later.

You very kindly provided the explanation for this gap as you were persuaded that you that you should become a member of Picton Castle Lodge of Mark Master Masons which you did on 26th May 1987, becoming Master of that Lodge in 1994.

Fortunately, you had the good sense to realise that the Craft and Royal Arch are the cornerstone of all freemasonry and you joined Cambrian Lodge and Hwlffordd Chapter to complete your knowledge of Pure Antient Freemasonry by going through all the Chairs.

W Bro Glan, you have combined a successful career as surgeon with your dedication to your family and freemasonry. A certificate and badge for 50 years’ service in the Craft seems a little inadequate after all your many achievements in freemasonry. You have been a fine example to us all and it is with great pleasure that I present you with this certificate to mark 50 years continuous service to The Craft and pin on this lapel badge which I trust you will wear with pride for the next 10 years, until we can present you with your 60-year certificate and badge.

Many congratulations.
