Dr John B Lloyd Bursary 2021

Madeleine Oakland is the recipient of the 2021 Dr John B Lloyd Masonic Bursary Award. James Ross, Head of West Wales Freemasons presented Madeleine with a cheque for £1500 and a certificate to commemorate the award on Friday 22nd October 2021 at Aberystwyth University.

 

The award is given annually by the Provincial Grand Charity of the Masonic Province of West Wales to encourage worthy students to further their education and Madeleine was selected this year because of her previous outstanding achievement in Higher Education.

 

Madeleine is studying for an MRes (Masters in Research) in Parasite Control at The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) at Aberystwyth University. Madeleine already has a BSc from Aberystwyth University gaining a First-Class Honours Award in Animal Science. As part of her degree, Madeleine spent a year in industry where she developed her interest in parasites which affect cattle.

 

Madeleine has been involved in the Animal and Veterinary Science Society at the University and is involved in the Aberystwyth Philomusica Orchestra and Concert Band. Madeleine also enjoys walking in the hills around Aberystwyth.

 

The Province of West Wales wishes Madeleine every success in her future studies.

 

 

 

 

Dr Ruth Wonfor is a former recipient of the Dr John Lloyd Bursary and is pictured here receiving her certificate from VW Bro Brian Hilling in 2011.

 

Thesis title: Effect of preimplantation factor on the innate        immune response of bovine mammary epithelial cells in vitro.

 

After completing her MSc, Ruth took up a PhD position at IBERS, developing her MSc thesis investigating endometritis in cattle. During this PhD she worked in Swansea and the US. She was successfully awarded her PhD and the worked for a short while as a postdoctoral researcher and as a lecturing assistant before securing a permanent lecturing position in IBERS.
